About UK Laser Micromachining Centre

UK-LMC Logo

The UK Laser Micromachining Centre (UK-LMC) is an open-access facility operated by Laser Micromachining Limited as part of the MNT Network. The UK-LMC has been operational since November 2005 and was founded with the primary aim of providing state-of-the-art commercial laser micromachining service provision to industry and research. The UK-LMC has an ethos of providing high quality customer services in combination with continual technical process innovations. This is reflected in its excellent record for on-schedule contract completion and its growing reputation in the precision laser micromachining sector.

The key founders of the UK-LMC, Dr. Nadeem Rizvi and Dr. Julian Burt, have 40 years of combined experience in lasers and microfabrication. In a relatively short time the UK-LMC has expanded its technical capabilities, the processes which it offers and its development staff. Additionally, the UK-LMC has established a wide-ranging and diverse customer base to enable LML to become the most flexible laser micromachining service provider in the UK. A continuing programme of expansion, both in staff and facilities, is allowing UK-LMC to strengthen and extend this position.

The UK-LMC is part-funded by the UK Department of Trade and Industry and the Welsh Assembly Government.

UK-LMC Key Staff

Dr. Nadeem Rizvi – General Manager

Dr. Nadeem Rizvi - General Manager

Nadeem Rizvi is an experienced laser physicist who has been active in the field of lasers and laser applications for over 20 years. Nadeem holds a Ph.D. in laser physics from Imperial College London and has previously held research positions at the Central Laser Facility of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, the Institute of Optics (Madrid) and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (University of Southampton). Nadeem was a member of the senior technical staff at Exitech Limited (Oxford) from 1994 to 2003 where he was responsible for the development of numerous laser micromachining techniques and applications. He left Exitech in 2003 to start the IBMM Laser Micromachining Centre at the University of Wales Bangor, the success of which led directly to the formation of the UK Laser Micromachining Centre.

Dr. Julian Burt – Systems & Development Manager

Dr. Julian Burt - Development Manager

Julian Burt has a background in electronic engineering and has been active in the area of microengineering and microfabrication for the past 20 years. Julian has a Ph.D. from the University of Wales, Bangor in the field of bio electronics and has had a successful research career in the development of Laboratory-on-a-Chip technology. As well as working with the UK Laser Micromachining Centre, Julian also holds a senior lectureship at the University of Wales, Bangor where he leads the microengineering and lab-on-a-chip research activities and runs the university's MSc course in Nanotechnology and Microfabrication.
